RYA Coastal Skipper
This course teaches the skills and techniques required to skipper a motor cruiser on coastal and offshore passages by day and night. There is an emphasis on putting pre learned theory into practice and will teach skippers to safely take motor cruisers on longer more complex passages. It develops the command and decision making aspects of Skippers to ensure the safety, wellbeing, and enjoyment of crew and passengers on board.
Assumed Knowledge: 15 days on a motor cruiser, 2 days as skipper, 300 miles, 8 night hours. Boat handling to the standard of the Day Skipper practical motor cruising course and navigation to the standard of the Coastal Skipper Theory course. VHF Radio and RYA First Aid are highly recommended for Coastal Skipper Candidates.
Course Duration: 5 days, generally 0930-1700, but will include some night exercises.
Minimum age: 17
Course Content: Passage planning, preparation for sea, pilotage, passage making and ability as a skipper, radar, boat handling, adverse weather conditions, emergency situations
Ability after the course: Able to skipper a motor cruiser on coastal passages by day and night. By the end of the course you should be ready to build on your experience and able to work towards a Certificate of Competence such as Yachtmaster Coastal.
1:1 tuition available: For anyone who would like to reduce contact with other candidates or who would like to spend the course with an instructor specifically targeting their training requirements.
