RYA Youth Powerboating (8 -15 years)
This two-day entry level course provides the skills and background knowledge needed to drive a powerboat and for Youth courses (12-15 years olds) it is the basis of the International Certificate of Competence (ICC).
It focuses on low speed close quarters handling, man overboard recovery, an introduction to driving at planing speed, and collision regulations. The course can be taken inland or on the coast and your certificate will be endorsed accordingly.
Assumed Knowledge: None. May be preceded by Go Power.
Course Duration: 2 day (0930-1700).
Age: 8-11 years old for Junior Power boating which is based around the RYA Level 1 Powerboat Syllabus, and 12-15 years old for Youth Powerboating which is based around the RYA Level 2 powerboat syllabus. For Youth powerboat courses (12-15) s the Level 2 powerboat certificate will be endorsed to say 'to be accompanied by a responsible adult'. This will be removed on the individuals 16th birthday.
Course Content: Launching and recovery, Boat preparation, crew preparation, boat handling, securing to a mooring buoy, anchoring, leaving and coming alongside, being towed, man overboard procedures.
Ability after the course: To be a self sufficient powerboat in appropriate conditions, to be aware of own limitations, and those of the vessel. Successful candidates will be able to join the Youth Powerboat Cruising course.
Under 16s powerboating courses will be run in similar ages, using suitable vessels that aren't too heavy or difficult to handle. To book an under 16 on a course, please select an under 16s specific course when booking.
